Elmer E. Barner 1865-1901

Elmer E. Barner was hanged in the jail yard at Harrisburg at 10:10 o'clock Tuesday morning for the murder of his brother-in-law, Isaac Miller, in Halifax township, Dauphin county, January 15, 1900.

He and Miller married sisters and lived as neighbors in Halifax township for nine years prior to the spring of 1899, when Barner removed to South Dakota. While there, he formed an opinion that his wife had not been true to him and like all similar delusions, the more he brooded over it the more positive he became that Miller had seduced his wife. To set matters right, she agreed to come back to Dauphin county with him.

They arrived at Millerstown, this county, January 15, 1900, from where they went across the country to Miller's home. Barner unburdened his mind. Miller, entirely innocent as is generally believed, indignantly denied Barner's charges when the latter drew a revolver and shot him dead. He was arrested, tried and convicted. Nothing else than conviction could be expected, considering the unmistakable and unjustifiable nature of his crime.

His execution was without incident- save the indifference with which he met his fate. Barner walked to the scaffold, dressed in the same suit that he wore when he killed Miller. He slept well during the night and for breakfast drank a glass of mild and ate some ice. He made no dying statement and his death was due to strangulation, so pronounced by the physicians in attendance fifteen minutes after the trap door had been sprung by Sheriff Reiff.

By far, my favorite Valentine's Day film is Picnic at Hanging Rock. The mystery, the death, the intrigue. I must say, the true romance of the film lies only in the costumes, flowers, crafts and cake; all of which I've developed quite the love affair for. Recently, my brother, who is married with 2 kids, purchased my childhood home, forcing my parents to re-locate. It's nice that we're keeping the home in the family and even nicer that it gave me the opportunity to go through so many boxes of goodies my parents kept in our attic. After opening the boxes, the smell of childhood filled the air. Books I read, dolls I played with, my mother's old bridesmaid frocks I used to play dress-up with; it was a veritable time travel to all things innocent and sprightly this past weekend. I took possession of a few of my most valued treasures and cannot wait to return home and rummage through more boxes.

Susan Sarandon is absolutely stunning in this film. It reminds me of her days on the Rocky Horror circuit.

Over The Looking Glass

After watching the new trailer for Tim Burton's adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, I fear that I may feel a wonder of malice towards this apparent sequel to the whimsical fairy tale that played such an integral role in my childhood. I wish that the movie makers of today would go back to the basics of a storybook, where the visual accompaniments, although they may be few, are detailed, thoughtful and serve as magical lamp-posts highlighting the bulk of the book (that being the story itself). This is by far one of my favorite representations of Lewis Carroll's classic tale, another being Harry Harris' version, no animation, simple puppetry, thoughtful costumes and no 3d glasses required. As Carol Channing so charmingly put it, "Bread and Butter!"

Also, to prepare for what's IN this decade, I picked up this fabulous handbook, published in the late 1950's, to make sure I'm one step ahead of the rest. Is buying an IN and OUT book so OUT you're IN? I'll just have to wait and see. Also, if you have no idea what film I am referencing in the title of this blog post, you are definitely OUT.

Pom Tree

Word spread fast of my moonlight craft sessions and 1/2 of my favorite couple, Matthew Shorts, asked me to make a holiday pom table centerpiece for him and Andres. At first, I thought I could make some clever candle holders, but when I remembered that women with candles have replaced women with cats as the new "sad thing," I decided on a miniature pom tree instead. (Disclaimer: Burning one Volcano candle at all times, does NOT a candle person make)

I began with a styrofoam cone from the craft store. I made sure to line the base of it with some felt. Next, from the base of the tree to about a 3/4 to the top I used medium sized poms.

Then, I finished the top off with some teeny tiny balls, which are a lot more difficult to manage than their larger brothers, go figure.

On a side note: I went to Whole Foods, which is conveniently nearby the craft store, and picked up some flowers. These little blossoms reminded me of green pom poms. Quite dandy.

Back to the project, so I assumed, at first, that I would top off the tree with one big ball. I tried it out...

but it felt way too clowny.

Instead, I decided to make a free-form star out of cardboard and dream-catcher weave it up with some shiny white yarn. I finished it off with some vintage buttons and random cameos as ornaments. This tree turned out so precious that I'm making a larger one for little ol' me.

As previously mentioned, gal pal Raena asked me to make her a wreath. This not only gave me a sense of purpose on those cold eventless nights, but satisfied my pocketbook and holiday gift budget as well. After looking at it more, I felt it was missing a little something. I always like the objects I make to have some sort of narrative attached to it, so I decided to add a mama bird perched on the bow, and the other three now played the part as her baby snow owls.

Nocturnal Nesting

Ever since my Sad Clown Costume, yarn pom poms have been my absolute obsession. I can't stop making them, wearing them in my hair, making my hair look like them and referencing them in everything I do. Gal pal Raena caught wind of said obsession and put in a request for a pom wreath. Now, since the holiday season is already here, I knew I didn't have time to make her a wreath entirely constructed out of pom poms, so I decided to pull a classic Tasi and wing it.

I began making white snowballs under the impression that I would end up with a pretty standard winter wreath scheme with some pom accents, no thrills...

it looked too boring. I turned to my handy-dandy loose button jar for inspiration.

Voila! Buttons became eyes (need I reference Coraline?) and snowballs became bodies. With a little felt beak, so became baby button snow owls. I simply hot glued those suckers onto a pre-made grapevine wreath, tied some scrap fabric up into a bow and with a few finishing button touches, Raena has got herself an owl-standing little wreath.

I couldn't have done it without my friends here... they're always encouraging me.

Gnar gnar was of no help.

On a recent trip to Paris I spent way too many Euro's at this magical little shop, Nini peau d'chien. It houses the most unique antiques, from 19th century apothecary bottles and doll parts to tiny bicycles that Dominique Bredoteau could have very well played with. One of the many things I left with was this fantastical mask from the 20's. I wish I could wear it everywhere.

I know the first post is traditionally a mission statement of sorts but, since I am no longer a member of certain social networking sites, I will take this opportunity to post my halloween pictures. My friends went pretty all out, from duo of David and Marylin to a Mummy, Dolly and The Hitcher from The Mighty Boosh. My costume this year was quite the project, I spent hours making yarn pom poms both large and small and fastened them onto a vintage child's dress. I also made matching pom pom fascinators and shoe barrettes. I'm pretty obsessed with pom poms now and plan to make everyone pom pom wreaths for their holiday gifts whether they like it or not.
